Does Organic Coffee Make a Difference?

Many experts have accepted the simple fact that there are wonderful health benefits in that cup of coffee many people drink. Although overdoing caffeine intake can be harmful, the overall health benefits of this delicious brew are impossible to ignore when it’s enjoyed in moderation.

However, despite the great benefits that a delicious cup can hold, it can also hold some dangerous pesticides. These pesticides or chemicals are not added by the employees at our favorite coffee shops around the world or even during the roasting process. They are added much earlier into the development of that great latté.

What Is Non-Organic Coffee?

What many coffee connoisseurs don’t take into account is that their cup of goodness could have been tampered with, and, in fact, is likely laced with poisonous chemicals. This poisoning of favorite drinks around the world is perfectly legal because it is not added to the roasting beans—it is, instead, mixed into the soil in which the coffee beans are grown. As the trees grow the coffee beans, they soak the chemicals used as pesticides and fertilizer into their root system. These chemicals are then moved into the beans and, in turn, they show up in cups of non-organic coffee everywhere. This is where organic coffee comes in. Organic coffee comes with a promise from the farmers that they are doing what they can to make sure cups of coffee are safe and have as many benefits as possible.

What Is Organic Coffee?

Organic coffee is coffee that has been raised without the dangerous herbicides and pesticides that have been used at most farms in recent years. Instead, organic farmers try to use traditional methods to fertilize their soil such as coffee pulp, chicken manure, and other organic materials. Although this method of growing produce is time-consuming and makes the work harder on the farmers, in the end, they can present a better cup of coffee every morning.

Health Benefits of Organic Coffee

Many people believe that organic coffee is higher in vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals than non-organic coffee. In fact, some studies find that coffee can help build the immune system, which will help coffee drinkers guard against disease. These benefits are believed to be boosted when one drinks organic coffee rather than coffee that has been grown using toxic synthetic chemicals.

The Benefits for Others

Most people do not stop to think about the many other people and creatures that are being helped, besides themselves, when they drink organic coffee. Factory-made chemicals used by large farms are added to the soil, where they soak in deeply and accumulate in high concentrations. According to the NOP (National Organic Partners), it takes three years for the land to be acceptable for an organic yield after having been drenched in these chemicals called fertilizers. This means that after one crop is grown using non-organic methods, the land and its inhabitants will be damaged by the aftereffects for years down the line. This is a problem that simply does not exist in areas where crops are farmed with organic methods.

Conclusion

All of these factors make the answer pretty clear. Organic coffee does make a difference—not just for the health of the consumer, but also for the health of the people and wildlife who live in areas where coffee is grown. By supporting organic coffee farmers, we can enjoy a healthier cup of coffee and help reduce agricultural pollution in the process.
